Library Policies and Procedures
schedule
Dan Mills’ library operates on a flexible schedule. The library is open from 7:45 a.m. until 2:45 p.m. every day. Students may be sent to the library (with a valid hall pass) to check out items from 8:10 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Students without a note or hall pass will be asked to return to class.
Teachers are encouraged to bring their classes to the library to conduct research. Please schedule classes as far in advance as possible. This helps ensure adequate planning and prevents double scheduling of classes. Please check the library calendar to check for available times. For collaborative units, classroom teacher(s) and I will schedule a planning session prior to the class session.
Teachers should accompany and supervise their classes in the library at all times, regardless of the purpose of the visit.
Classes cannot be scheduled with a substitute teacher unless prior arrangements have been made with the librarian.
Lunch and planning times are varied depending on scheduling needs. Our library clerk and I stagger our lunches so the library is always available. I will always attempt to adjust my schedule to accommodate class needs when research units have been planned.
Up to five students at a time may be sent for check out or small group research. For small group research, prior notification is useful so that resources are available for student use. Students that are sent to the library to use the computers must have a note from their teacher stating the reason for the use of the computers. Students without a note will be asked to return to the teacher to obtain one.

Student checkout policies
Students in grades 1-4 may check out two (2) items at a time, for two (2) weeks at a time, after they have returned a signed permission slip. You may download a copy of the permission slip here.
Fourth grade students may check out Playaways, which are MP3 players that have digital audio books loaded on them. Fourth grade students are encouraged to check out the accompanying book when they check out a Playaway. Due to the high cost of Playaways ($35-$65 per Playaway), fourth graders must have a signed Playaway permission slip on file. You may download a copy of the Playway permission slip here.
Students transferring from another MNPS school must return all library items and settle their library account with that school before they are allowed to check out items from Dan Mills' library.
We do not charge fines for overdue items; however, students must return overdue items before additional items may be checked out.
Overdue notices are printed and distributed to homerooms every Monday. Teachers are asked to let students know they have overdue items and keep the list for their records.
Students who lose or damage items beyond repair will be charged the replacement cost of the item. Students who habitually lose items and do not pay for them will not be allowed to check out items and will be limited to using books only in the library.

Faculty checkout policies
Faculty may check out a maximum of 30 items before the system requires library staff to enter an override.
All library books will be checked out for 42 days (6 weeks).
Please give as much notice as possible when resources are needed. We will be happy to pull books and media and place them on reserve for library or classroom use. Please see Mrs. Criswell if you need to request items from the Nashville Public Library.
All overdue materials must be turned in before checking out new items.

The library catalog can be accessed by going to the link above or through Dan Mills' website (under “Academics” tab). It can also be found in the library link on the MNPS homepage. Please bookmark the catalog on your computer. Many electronic resources are available through our catalog page. You may also check our catalog to determine the availability of print and video resources that correlate with your lessons. Please let me know if you would like to reserve any items found in the catalog. I can put them on hold for use in the library or check them out to the teacher to use in the classroom.

Limitless libraries
This joint project between the Nashville Public Library and all MNPS school libraries allows elementary teachers to request books and media from the public library and receive them at our school. Teachers will use a special NPL Educator Card for checking out up to 50 items at a time. Please see Mrs. Criswell if you need to apply for an educator card.
Mrs. Criswell has a higher limit of items that can be checked out on her librarian card. If you would like to provide her with a subject or a list of titles, she can request the items from NPL. These items will be held on reserve for your students to use in the library.
